Heal the Bay, Clean Spirited’s June Charity of the Month by DK
Clean Spirited would like to introduce our June charity of the month, Heal the Bay. Heal the Bay was founded in 1985 to stop the dumping of raw sewage into the Santa Monica Bay. The bay was in a terrible state. Swimmers and surfers were contracting strange rashes along with frequent respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses. There were dead zones, where no marine life could survive because of the lack of oxygen. Fish in the bay had fin rot, and local dolphins had tumors. Dorothy Green, an LA mom and budding environmentalist, discovered that the city of Los Angeles’ Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant was a disaster, dumping incompletely treated sewage into the bay and breaking the law in many different ways. She gathered a group of like-minded individuals along with activist Howard Bennett and Heal the Bay was born! Today, through the hard work of Heal the Bay founders and volunteers, Hyperion is a world-class treatment facility. Fish and dolphins no longer have fin rot and tumors, and plant and animal life has returned to the dead zones. Heal the Bay continues to restore and protect California’s threatened waterways and beaches. For the past 5 years, they have been leading the fight to ban plastic bags in the Los Angeles area. This fight ended in victory this past week as the City Council voted 13-1 to phase out plastic bags over the next 16 months at an estimated 7,500 stores in Los Angeles! Clean Spirited is very proud to donate $1 from every order to this very worthy cause.
